Reporting to the Livestock Traceability Technical Manager, the NLIS Technical Specialist is responsible for overseeing the installation and implementation of fixed livestock identification tag scanning technologies for livestock processors, depots and feedlot operators; liaising with software and hardware suppliers; liaising with abattoir operators to implement infrastructure upgrades; and supporting sheep and goat processors to maintain livestock identification tag scanning technologies, as part of the transition to electronic NLIS (Sheep & Goats).
The role requires using knowledge of livestock identification scanning technologies and experience in how the sheep and goat processing sector operates, which will be critical for the successful resolution of operational issues.
Excellent problem solving and organisational skills are essential, as well as the ability to relate effectively to key internal and external stakeholders.
The position is within the Livestock Traceability Team within the Chief Veterinary Officer's Unit in the Biosecurity and Agriculture Services Branch of Agriculture Victoria. The Livestock Traceability Team manages the development and implementation of the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) standards, business rules, systems and activities that ensure Victoria meets national livestock traceability requirements and performance standards. The implementation of NLIS (Cattle), NLIS (Pigs) and the recently introduced electronic NLIS (Sheep & Goats) provides improved biosecurity, market access and productivity outcomes for Victorian agriculture.
